I know these. Salertus was a member of the Roman senate during the time of Caligula. Salertus kept his head when so many others lost theirs by being one of Caligula's best drinking buddies.

Salacious is how the food really tastes to them. (sailors) It's not quite delicious, after all. It's the sailor's palate's compromise. Tabasco sauce helps in making said food salacious.
