My Husband "Subvet" says that when our first son "Sonshine" was born the sun rose on our world, when our second son "Gator" was born the sun laughed and when our daughter "Sugars" was born all the flowers bloomed. That says it all.

It's about learning how to dance in the rain."

Modesty! a sewing post

Well, it's been a long time since I put up a sewing post!  I have been sewing quite a lot.  But mostly it's either quilting on a giant Mommie Quilt or cutting off and hemming holy kneed jeans.

However, I thought I'd share this bit of mending with you in case you run across a similar problem with your girls.

My mom made some shirts for my daughter, but this one wasn't exactly modest in the neck line

The shirt fits otherwise, is cute and has shorts that match it so I really wanted her to be able to wear it. So here is how I made it a bit more modest.

I took some gathered eyelet lace

and hand sewed it in the neckline so that the lace would stick up and fill that deep scoop.

Cute huh?

Remember, often times there is a simple and quick fix to our wardrobe issues!
have a great day folks.

Thoughts about jobs.

I've started a new blog!!   I'm starting a business called Made by Mightymom.  Decided to see if I can make some $$ off of all this stuff I create!   The business blog is just getting started, but please "follow" it so that you can see some of the things I have to offer once I get them posted :-)

Right now I am making crocheted rosaries.  Later in the year some fun Christmas gift ideas will come up for sale so stand by.  This is a whole new world for me to figure out.  :-)

Welcome to Lent

And here's the Lent curtain!

The back is a solid black, I will turn the curtain around and show just the black from Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday. (aka the Triduum)

I wanted this curtain to be intentionally simple. The only beauty in this curtain is the fabric. In other words it's not to be a source of pride for me, just a nice curtain to remind us to put Christ first during this season of Lent.

As we move into Lent and prepare for Jesus's Crucifixion and Resurrection, I encourage us all to set aside sources of personal pride. Focus on the fact that without the love of God we can do nothing.

Here's what the kids have decided to give up for Lent. Sonshine - his Woody, Gator - all his cars, Sugars - a dog and a firetruck.

what are you giving up as a reminder of what Christ gave for you?

A Beautiful Day!

So, I've been working on sprucing up the living room by way of new curtains. I had a couple of obstacles when wanting to make a curtain for our door. The large window in the door provides much of the natural light in the room during the day, we also have to raise the miniblinds every morning to watch for the schoolbus.

But, you gotta admit, this looks a bit drab!

What to do?

Make a light button-up curtain of course!

I put button holes at 2 levels so that the curtain can be raised either half way.....

or all the way up.....

I learned that if you want your buttonholes to be stronger then just sew them twice!!

I also learned this is a LOT easier to do BEFORE you cut the hole open.

There was a lot of "winging it" done on this curtain. I've never made a tab top curtain before....nor could I actually find a pattern for a button up curtain. It's the first time I've put gathered lace on top of a ruffle, which was tricky.....finally the decision to gather the bottom so that the curtain wouldn't flare out straight and cover the doorknob was completely spontaneous!

I have to say, I find this to be one dang CUTE curtain!! :-)

Let's see who does a better job prediciting the weather.....

Make it a great day folks!

It's raining, it's pouring!

I am thrilled to report that it has been storming all night long! I am so thrilled to see the rain! After the years of drought and last fall's fires Texas needs a 100 year flood!! Since only the garage half of my house is in the 100 year flood plain.......bring it on! (but let me know first so I can empty my fabric out of the garage!...priorities ya know.)

Speaking of fabric.....
the great curtain-making campaign continues!

I am now working on regular (non-seasonal) curtains for the other windows in my living room. I'm so excited to be adding a little newness to the living room. It has been the same color and same curtains since we moved in 9 years ago. The furniture has, of course, changed over the years as the babies took over the other rooms, and the swing, bouncer, playpen etc took center stage in the living room for a season (or THREE)....and now it's out and the computer/work stuff has moved in....

But if you want just a little change that'll brighten your room, think about new curtains! Super easy to make and can change the whole feel of a room!

Make it a great, wet, day today folks!

by the way, blogger still isn't letting me comment on blogger blogs very much.....which I find EXTREMELY annoying since my blog and sign in name are on blogger!! So that's why you haven't heard from me lately.

productive monrings are wonderful!

I spent yesterday morning on the phone for about 3 hours just getting things taken care of. Appointments that needed to be made, insurance screwups that needed fixing, and getting all 18 of our family's routine medicines registered for the mail order service.

This morning I spent an hour or so between calls finally finishing our Winter Post-Advent curtain!

It is so much prettier in person! the colors are rich and dark, which is part of why it didn't photograph well, and the angels have a lot of detail that is just gorgeous!

I got the fabric for the Lent, Easter and Spring curtains in the mail this week!! So, if you need me.....you know where I'll be!

I'll end with a prayer request:

Local Friends and Family: On March 6th hubby willl be having his right knee replaced. He won't be able to drive for 2 months, and because I work nights I won't be able to get Sister to and from preschool during those 2 months. Would it be possible for anyone (or several ones) to bring her home after preschool starting March 19th till he can drive again? She's there Mon, Wed, Thurs. And we do live about 25min North of the church. If you're interested in helping us out, PLEASE let me know. We'll be happy to provide gas money.

It is Finished!!

The Birthday Curtain has been completed on time!!

I do hope Mimi is surprised!

The square with "Mimi" is held on by that big black button, and I have several other squares with other names to be put there when the correct birthday comes along :-)

We shall be heading off about 10am to Scottish Rite Hospital with Sugars to have her evaluated. Meanwhile the boys will be having a surprise birthday party with Mimi at home after school!!

These are the things that make memories!

I'll check in with everyone once we have answers about my girl.

Y'all make it a great day!

BUTTONHOLES!!!

As you may or may not know, there are two things that tend to scare those of us who sew.....

And one of them is buttonholes!

I specifically picked out my sewing maching because it had an automatic buttonholer! Plop your button in the right spot, hit the pedal, and voila! a buttonhole to match!!

However, it only works for buttons up to 1" in diameter.

For my birthday curtain I have in the center a removable panel that shows the name of the Birthday boy or girl (or, in the case of March 2, it's Birthday girlS). This panel is held in place by a button.

A 1 1/2" wide button.

Which means I have had to master the manual buttonhole!

Hooray! 8 lovely buttonholes later I can say Mission Impossible has been accomplished!

Now, on to zippers.....shudder.......

Back to the Grind

Well, as of today all the kids were back to school, my job continues. I still love it and can't think of anything else I'd rather do to earn a living.

I've been spending my free time sewing rather than blogging, just in case you've missed me. I have a handful of projectst that I'm trying to get finished. Right now I'm working on my seasonal curtains, So far I have the Halloween flag, the Fall curtain, and the Advent curtain.

Now I'm working on one that'll be hung on each person's birthday, with a removable block that tells the name of the birthday boy or girl. Next up is a winter one, then Lent.....and they continue throughout the year.....

But it hasn't been ALL work, since Stephanie sent us these wonderful stuffed candy canes, at least ONE of us has been having himself a very good time.......

Make it a great year folks!

Getting there....

For some reason I'm having a hard time getting into the Christmas spirit this year.

However, I am slowly getting there. Looking at the calendar with Sonshine on Sunday I realized we are LESS THAN 2 weeks till Christmas!! So I have taken a few measures to help turbo boost my Christmas Spirit.

First off, I have FINISHED my Nativiy curtain!!! It looks better than I expected so I'm pleased about that.

I have also finished all of our Christmas presents....but you don't get to see those yet!

We went for our pictures with Santa. Totaly new experience for me to feel VIP at the front of the line. Santa was AWESOME!!

Now, I just have to decide which picture to put in the Christmas cards.....

Which would you choose?

As my final attempt to kindle some good ol Christmas Spirit, tonight I have restarted what used to be an anual December tradition of mine:

If you'll excuse me, I've got some Humbug to banish...with the help of a ghost or two.............

A Quilt for my Sister

Several months ago my sister moved into her first apartment. I made this quilt for her as a housewarming gift.

She loves music and cats about as much as I do!

Recognize the little pawprint binding??

The borders are quilted from the front...but easier to photograph from the back, so the images are mirrored in these pictures.

Do you recognize what they all are??

I had a lot of fun making this quilt for my "younger" sister (she doesn't like me to call her my kid sister anymore....even though she always will be!)

I even threatened to keep it for myself! But hey, a sister's a sister, right?

I'd say this was for the Grandparents.....

I always think it's funny when you get your own reflection or shadow in the picture!!

You should hear her Heffalump call!!

Tonight, I shall post pics of the other two so hang tight.

One thing finished, another moving along...

Halloween costumes are finished!!

I shall cut the bottom off when he's awake to try it on as I'm afraid he's gonna trip on his cape.

Look! no strings around our necks! and we can be a VAMPIRE BAT just by raising our arms!!

Update on my Gimpy Girl

We got a letter from Scottish Rite requesting more info. I'm taking this as a good sign. Will be faxing the form back tonight! Thanks for the prayers! Keep em coming!!!

Momma, it's getting to be Halloween!!

Every day I'm greeted by this mantra from Sonshine!!!

So I guess it's about time to get those costumes made!!

Here is Miss Purple Heffalump

Sonshine wanted to be a Vampire!

The glue and paint haven't dried yet.

The only thing I have left to do is to attach Sonshine's vampire cape to the back of his black sweatshirt once it's all dry. I don't like things tied around their necks!! He'll wear a pair of black sweat pants and I'll paint his face to his specifications....

Who knew you could buy both black and silver lame' ???

Gator wanted to be "A Big Piece of Cheese"...there's a story behind that! He kept saying he wanted to be a cat. Well he was a cat last year so I told him to pick something different. When he insisted on being a cat I told him if he didn't pick something I was just going to make him a big piece of cheese for Halloween, thinking he'd hate that idea!

Goofball, he LOVED it!! And has wanted nothing else ever since!

He has black long sleeve shirt and black sweat pants to wear under this shirt, it'll come down to his knees, I think.

Some of you may remember me saying that I couldn't believe I'd bought something to support the Green Bay Packers.....

Well?? how else was I going to make him a Big Piece of Cheese???

:-)

and how about you? what are you/your kids going to be for Halloween this year? Do you make or buy your costumes???
