My Husband "Subvet" says that when our first son "Sonshine" was born the sun rose on our world, when our second son "Gator" was born the sun laughed and when our daughter "Sugars" was born all the flowers bloomed. That says it all.

Friday Fragments...again

Stink-pot!

What happens when nap time ends at the same time that Mom's waking up for the evening!

Has anyone else stood on tiptoe with the camera held over their head to take a good picture of flowers in a vase on top of the piano...only to ask yourself 10 min and 15 pics later,

"Why don't I just put them on the keyboard to get a picture?"

goals and answers

About the boogie woogie piano, I've played the piano all my life (minus the first 3 years) and I have neither the talent nor the dedication to practicing to be able to play like that guy does...that is a true gift.

on the tooth issue...obviously the superglue didn't work....sigh. It's his 5th tooth and they cost the tooth fairy a dollar a piece. Which, I agree is a pretty penny. The funniest thing is that he has no idea what to do with that dollar so after a couple days it finds its way (back) into Dad's wallet. He's just not getting the whole money thing yet. :-)

Last week's goals were:
1) make it through the week without crying at work again.
2) quilt 3 more diamonds.
3) get the giveaway winners' stuff in the mail

1) done, but just barely. There was at least once I had to call Subvet so he could talk me down off the ceiling.

2) I got 2 1/2 done. Haven't yet finished that 3rd. That brings our total to 11 done and 7 to go....moving along.

3) dammit.

For next week.
1) make a massive mailing
2) quilt 2 more diamonds and finish the half quilted one.
3) exercise at least once
4) call and make all the appointments that are accumulating on my todo list.
5) replenish my snuggleometer.

and you? what's your goal for this week?

mourning in the morning.

So Sonshine came down the hall early this morning...(about 5am) and I noticed something was different....matter of fact, something was MISSING!

His smile just wasn't quite the same...will never be the same again I fear.

pictures later once I'm home.....for now I must break out my black veil and hanky

Diane's Liver Quivering Meme.

Okay, so that's not what she called it. She called it something boring like the 10 things meme or something....but I'm gonna call it her Liver Quivering Meme...you'll see why as you read her rules. Here they be:

No requirement to tag anyone, or to link to me or anyone else. Just copy and paste the questions to your blog, erase my answers and do whatever makes your liver quiver.

Yup, that's what she said...no rules or tags necessary...just do whatever makes your liver quiver. I'm gonna see if she'll make a new little pic for it too, as it's now been renamed and all!!

:-)

So let's get started then:

1.] How come I can never find: a pretty dress that will fit me?
2.] I wish I'd never started: this latch hook rug. it takes FOREVER to do ONE row on it and I may never get around to finishing the thing!!
3.] I wonder why: some farts are noisy and others aren't...but I have a whole post about that for later....
4.] Mama always told me: "I'm gonna knock you into the middle of next week." personally I thought that was a cool idea...then I'd be able to just chill out till everyone else caught up to me!!
5.] There's this one thing in my closet that I just can't seem to get rid of: my wedding dress. now I will NEVER wear it again. It's a size 3 and I'm a size 16. So why am I keeping it??
6.] My favorite guilty pleasure is: Chocolate and Dr Pepper. preferably together!
7.] I always forget to: make the bed. poor hubby has fussed and fussed at me over it too.....
8.] I have never: had any desire to jump off of or out of anything!!
9.] I'm obsessed with: beating Father Dismas at Typing Maniac!! My current high score is 213,951...his is 214,889. Get on facebook and cheer me on!!!
10.] One of my favorite memories is: blackberries in milk and sugar at Mom Baker's house....this is recently brought on by Stephanie's bragging over her fresh blackberries!!

All I want for Christmas......

well, sometime here real soon we're gonna have a snaggletoothed smile. Sonshine is JUST ABOUT to lose one of his front upper teeth.

This isn't surprising as he's already lost all 4 bottom fronts....but something about seeing that crookedy front upper gets to me. I don't want to pull it. Matter of fact, the thought has crossed my mind that I MIGHT be able to super glue it back in place...

I don't remember giving him permission to be big enough to lose his 2 front teeth! Course then I'll have to teach him yet another Christmas song :-)

(finding out he was 4'1" and 57lbs didn't help with my growing-up phobia either!)

now...where'd I put that glue?

Created by Mrs 4444, Friday Fragments are bits and pieces of your week that are usually brief; too short for a stand-alone post, but too good to discard. Collect humorous observations, "Heard" items, and other small gems and put them together in a Friday Fragments post.

posted on facebook earlier this week:
apparently crying at work is discouraged by the bigwigs....it seems to not portray the "positive attitude about the new computer system" they want to see. sigh.

so I had last night off work, so this morning I let Subvet sleep in a little bit and I gave the boys a bath. As I'm washing their hair I mentioned how Sonshine got daddy's hair while Gator got mine...I was talking about the texture/thickness/straightness of our relative heads. Then Sonshine says to me in a rather panicked voice

"Noooo! I don't get WHITE HAIR!!"

ah well, as I told Sub, if he takes after my family he won't have to worry about white hair as it'll all fall out long before that's a problem!

GOALS

Goals for last week were:
1) quilt 2 more diamonds
2) exercise 3 nights.

1) DONE! I quilted 3 diamonds and now have 9 of the 18 quilted!!

Hooray for the halfway mark!!

2) ick. well. I THINK I only exercised one night. maybe two, definitely not 3.

For next week:
1) make it through the week without crying at work again.
2) quilt 3 more diamonds.
3) get the giveaway winners' stuff in the mail!

I may just get this quilt finished after all! It's the downhill/home stretch.

I'm really looking forward to starting the 2 projects that are next on the agenda too. First I'm going to mend Sugars' dress which got a huge rip in it the Sunday before last, then I'm going to finish the apron for her dress (finally!) Then I'm going to get the kids started on this year's Christmas gifts. And then....AND THEN....AND THEN I'm going to start putting together my Mommy Quilt. It shouldn't take long to piece as most of it is already put together. The embroidery will take a little while, though. I'm trying to decide what to back it with...I'm leaning toward putting flannel on the back of this one to make it extra snuggly.

So, forward march! And Tally Ho! and Away We Go!

what was I saying?

I had about 3 posts in my head that I was writing the other day.

I usually do this...I write a post almost entirely in my head before I sit down to type it on the computer.

There's only one problem with this...

I can't remember what I was gonna write!!

We're gonna blame it on stress. I'm working 4 nights this week and next week because on Saturday the hospital went from a 100% paper chart to a 100% coputerized chart. Suffice it to say that the change has been far from smooth.

Sooner or later I suppose those posts will re-emerge from the depths of my murky brain.

Runoff Race

Each of these got the same number of votes....so vote again, only for ONE this time. It's a runoff.

I say:

A Good News Day/ Friday Frags

Created by Mrs 4444, Friday Fragments are bits and pieces of your week that are usually brief; too short for a stand-alone post, but too good to discard. Collect humorous observations, "Heard" items, and other small gems and put them together in a Friday Fragments post.

Had my annual eval at work. Ever since I had a manager set out to destroy me (and I don't use those words lightly or sarcastically) in my first job out of school I've been really nervous come eval time.

I didn't know what to expect with this manager as I'd heard a story or two about her bringing up things out of the blue.

Well, my eval was very, very good. And along with it came a dollar an hour raise. YIPPEEEE!! very nice. I guess I'll stick around here for awhile if they're gonna treat me so well! :-)

poor hubby went to go buy our soon-to-be-kindergardener his school supplies. Hubby's first school supply experience. His reaction?
"I felt like I was on a damn scavenger hunt!"
results?
he got almost everything exactly as on the list...despite such trials as Walmart calling brads "fasteners" and other such confusions.
He's a good man!

And today is our 10th anniversary!!! yippeeeeeee!!
We're going out to dinner and to see Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince to celebrate!! I'm so excited! I started rereading the HBP last week so it'll be fresh in my mind and we can pick apart the movie while we eat! :-)

Thesaurus Thursday...coming soon!!

There are a few folks who started coming by after Thesaurus Thursday went on hiatus.

So I thought I'd repost an explanation and the "rules" of Thesaurus Thursday for us all to review before it starts back up in a couple weeks.

Here's how it works:

Each week (hopefully on Thursday...) I will post two words whose definitions I do not know. I find all words and most definitions in my Random House Webster's College Dictionary, copyright 1992

The "rules" of Thesaurus Thursday are as follows:

First and foremost, leave as many funny definitions for either word (or both) as you can think up in the comments!! The ones that make me laugh the hardest will be given the Silly Goose Award.

Next, if you know (or think you know) the true definitions without looking them up then be sure and leave those in the comments too!! All definitions that are correct (or close enough for government work and Mighty Mom) will win the Smarty Pants Award!

the following Thursday I will post the correct definitions for the previous week's words, the winners of the Silly Goose and the Smarty Pants awards, as well as two more words for the next week's game.

You have all week to think up definitions and get those creative juices flowing!!
By the way, I never said that only one person can win each award each week. I've been known to give either or both to several folks at a time. And if you know the correct definition...but it's already been left in the comments then leave it again and show how smart you are!! So long as you didn't look it up and you knew it before you read the comments you're a Smarty Pants too!

A word of advice. Many folks have said that they couldn't think up any funny definitions AFTER reading all the other silly stuff in the comments. So look at the words and come up with your definitions BEFORE you read the comments!! Even if someone else wrote what you were gonna say...say it anyway!!

Now, start warming up....starting in August we're gonna be increasing our vocabulary and exercising our funny bones at the same time!!

goals

Goals for last week were:

1) quilt 3 diamonds
2) dance with Richie 3 times..adding at least one song.

1) is done!! now up to 6 quilted diamonds on this quilt...12 to go.
2) I only did my Richard Simmons tape once this week, but I did add another song!...after that I got sick and didn't feel like exercising.

Goals for next week:
1) quilt 2 more diamonds
2) exercise 3 nights.

cheer me on folks!

Oh and Steph asked me:
How are you able to stand that blanket across your lap in a Texas summer? I could understand if it was January....

answer is I married a YANKEE! He keeps the thermostat at 66 during the day and 69 at night. Now, since it's about 100+ in the day and 85 at night it actually stays right around 70ish inside. Which to me is chilly. I prefer 75-80 myself. So most of the time I'm found with a blanket over my lap...like right now for instance!

this makes quilting in the summer no problem at all!

suffering

well folks.

I'm suffering from the following ailments:

a bad cold/virus/URI

quilter's obsession ~~must.finish.this.quilt.~~

writer's block

Since I called in sick to work tonight and can't think of a single thing to write about I decided I'd write about not being able to think of anything to write about.

how's that strike you??

Did you know that quilts grow??
It's true!

I've never machine quilted, I always quilt by hand...and I can tell you that somehow the dang thing gets bigger the more time you spend quilting on it!

Now, I've said before that for every project there comes a point in time where it is just tedious. And only tenacity and holding to your vision of the finished thing will keep you going. For me that happens during the making of a quilt top. This is different from what is going on right now with this quilt.

well, the same only different....if you follow me.

I love to hand quilt. It is relaxing and fun and far from tedious work. However, I quilt on a thing for HOURS ~~literally~~ and then spread it out to see that I haven't hardly made a dent in the thing. Section it off and work on a single section...figuring to be done with this or that part in a day or so...again quilt for HOURS and spread it out to see that the quilt is now twice it's original size and will take a year to finish!

I don't know how it happens..but the things grow when you're not looking.
Makes me kinda afraid to put it down for very long....

the parts without safety pins are done.

sigh, back to work!

Coming in August....

Thesaurus Thursday will return!!

meme for a good cause.

Apparently a blogfriend of a blogfriend (y'all know how that goes) is doing some kind of bloggity research for her PHD. Being as how I haven't answered these particular questions in awhile...and I deemed them more suited to a post rather than a commet I am answering her research questions here.

So, this is from Carie at reflectionsofasheepishlion which took me 3 tries to figure out that it said "reflections of a sheepish lion"!!

I am researching mommy blogs and would be SO grateful if you would help me by commenting and answering these questions! (If you would rather, you can email me at carie.lambert@ttu.edu and submit your answers there.)

1. What is the address of your mommy blog?
2. How long have you been blogging?
3. How often do you blog?
4. Why did you begin to blog?
5. What do you blog about?
6. How many mommy blogs do you read on a weekly basis?
7. If you advertise on your mommy blog, what do you advertise (products, services, organizations—please be specific)?
8. If you have a blog other than your mommy blog, what is the subject of that blog?

Thank you for your time! I will visit your blog soon and appreciate your helping me research!

Also, (I'm adding this) How do you feel about the term MommyBlog? And did you have issues with my posting on your comment page? (I struggled with that, but I wanted to be genuine and transparent....)

I loved visiting your blogs and hope to visit again soon. So many of you have great ideas about how to enjoy life and family! :-) Thank you for sharing that with me!

1) www.texassiren.blogspot.com my husband picked it. Actually he picked my name Mightymom as well,(he also calls me NinjaNurse when the situation warrants it). When all URL versions of "My Wonderful Life" were taken he plugged in "texas siren" and here we are. This is funny to us because in 1998 he moved from Conn to Tx so pursue a relationship with me. We'd met online and I was in nursing school you see. Apparently my prowess as siren worked out pretty good!

2)Since June 16, 2007. :-) just over 2 years now.

3) whenever time and lifestyle permit. usually I spend some time on the computer either reading or writing blogposts every day. But there are times when I'll go all week without doing more than checking email and reading my comments. I use the prescheduled posts to my advantage and will often sit and write out 4 or 5 posts at a time scheduled to post once a day over the course of a week. Then all I need to do for the rest of the week is read. Since blogger is having issues with this function I have not been particularly happy.

4) 2 years ago hubby worked nights. I suffer from chronic insomnia and as a stay at home mom with a hubby who worked nights I found myself getting more and more lonely. He started blogging first....then told me about his blog...a couple months later he said "you should start a blog...I'll get you set up." and he did. I told him at the time it was great because "I felt like I had a lot to say and no one to say it to." Diana, my blogfriend, and I have often discussed how because I ask and answer questions here on a regualr basis we've gotten to know each other and relationships have been formed. Honest friendships. Those relationships were what I was lonely for and what I have gained through blogging. I don't care to have 100 hits a day or build a business or be a fabulous writer. I need friends. And I cherish each of the friendships I've made.

5) the first answer is whatever comes to mind. However, I made a goal that I would only post aspects of my life that were uplifting or funny. Raising 3 special needs kids gets rough. And I am prewired to be a complainer. I hate being around complainers though, so I chose to work on finding a funny perspective to every situation that I could. Over the 2 years this has become easier...to where, for example, when I see Sugars calmly emptying my lunchbag just moments before I need to grab it and run out the door...instead of getting angry I get my camera and wonder how I'm going to caption THAT! See yesterday's Friday Fragments post! There's enough whining in our world and precious little humor. :-) by the way...this decision to focus on the wonderful and silly aspects of my life is where the title "My Wonderful Life" came from. My life really is wonderful and I want to always show excatly how wonderful it is. I really don't care much for that Christmas movie folks keep referring to.

6) Let's see here, my reader has 27 blogs. I'm not sure what you need to be called a "mommy blog" 16 of them are written by women with children. But they don't always write about their children...and for several, their children are grown, some have grandchildren. Like me, we write about our lives. Because we are mothers parenting comes in there somewhere, but because we are women so do other things.

7) I don't advertise. I thought for awhile about doing paid posts...but they felt too fake to write and I want this to stay fun, not be a job. I AM however, in the process of doing a product review for a GREAT educational game and website that Moms and their schoolaged kids are going to love...and I'm excited that there's gonna be a GIVEAWAY attached...
STAY TUNED!!

8) with 3 kids, 2 cats, 1 husband and a full time nights job to keep track of...there's no way I need more than one blog. thank you very much!

8+) the term Mommyblog doesn't really make me feel anything. you could call my blog a mommyblog...a sewing/quiltingblog...a funnyblog....a militarysupportblog...or any other label you want. Just like sticking a label on my kids doesn't change who they are or what their potential will be, sticking one on my blog doesn't make any difference either.

8++) issues with you posting on my comment page???? HUH?? GEEZ, I work hard to GET people to comment! as the old lady at the top says "would it kill you to comment?"

Carie, thanks for your interview...I was happy to answer your questions. I hope that your research is fruitful. Feel free to quote me on anything...so long as you site my blog as reference...and let me know so I can go and see my name in lights. :-)

to my friends, if you feel so inclined...I hereby tag you with this MommyBlogResearchMeme. Eh, grad school is tough...help a gal out!

goals

okay....anyone remember me making goals?? I'm sure I did....waaaay back when!! Seems like forever ago as it was pre-surgery.

On a side note I have to say that no longer marking the months by PMS and periods has been downright UPLIFTING!!

It's been 3 months since I've had a period....and I ain't missed it yet!!!

:-)

back to goals. Okay, sister's quilt is being quilted in large diamonds. There are 18 of these in the quilt. So far 3 are quilted. That leaves 15 to quilt in enough time to get this thing bound and finished by Aug 24th. I figure if I quilt one diamond each night I'm off work I should have it done in time. I'm also trying to make a dancing date with Richard Simmons each night I'm off. So.

Goals for this week are

1) quilt 3 diamonds
2) dance with Richie 3 times..adding at least one song.

There...we'll see how it goes and I'll get back to you next Wednesday with an update and new goals. ;-)

and did you notice that the turtle moved????

oh woe is me.

I haven't figured it out.

For some reason there's no one online to email/chat with at 3am.

It's so very rare I find someone to talk to at this time....you know while the patients sleep and I'm looking for something to do so I can procrastinate charting.

So, I'm taking volunteers.
Anyone want to volunteer to chat with me TOMORROW at 3am? While I procrastinate working? I really can find all sorts of interesting things to talk about....really! I can.

You're not even posting on your blogs....

oh woe is me.

Now, Lori says these are good for trashbags in the car.....but I would never use such lovely semisturdy large bags with handles for that job!! These babies are going in my closet!!

The Star Spangled Banner

I love the words to this song. We all know them, but take a minute and really read them. Especially verse two.

O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?

And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that starspangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

O thus be it ever, when free men shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation;
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'nrescued land
Praise the pow'r that hath made and preserved us a nation!

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just;
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust!"
And the starspangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Francis Scott Key

Rampart: 1.a) a mound of earth, rubble, or similar material raised around a place as a fortification. b) such a fortification together with a stone or earth parapet capping it. 2. anything serving as a bulwark or defense. Webster's College Dictionary 1992

Now folks, turn off that there computer and go hug your family and thank God that someone sat behind a rampart with bombs exploding around them so that YOU MAY BE FREE.

God Bless Our Soldiers, past, present and future.

God Bless America.

God Bless You.

P.S.
While I refuse to wish anyone a Happy 4th of July, I whole heartedly wish all of my readers a Happy Independence Day. Remember the reason for the celebration folks.

Bunny Milk

Well, so mornings have been a fight for awhile now.

Apparently my kids do not want to drink milk...not even chocolate milk anymore.

But because I'm just SOOOO mean they must finish one cup of milk before they can leave the breakfast table.

Now, every once in awhile we get donuts for breakfast...and at the donut shop they sell

Bunny Milk!!

Now, for SOME reason my kids will drink 3 cups of Bunny Milk without a second thought.

As a matter of fact, the other day while I was out getting donuts Dad made their chocolate milk not knowing I was buying Bunny Milk too....As soon as I got home and told them I had Bunny Milk they ran and grabbed their cups off the counter and DOWNED them...then asked for more. Yup, those cups that Dad had made....you know the ones that WEREN'T Bunny Milk at all.

HMMMMMM.

My Mean Old Mommy brain kicked in.

We now have an ENDLESS supply of Bunny Milk!!

Wanna guess what's in the bottle??

yup

looks like Bunny Milk to me!

What is it Momma??

We went to Olive Garden Sunday with some long time friends of Subvet's from his first boat.

(Hi Pam)

I got the seafood portofino.

Sonshine, sitting next to me, was fascinated with these:

So, silly woman that I am, I stuck them all in my togo box and washed them off for the kids to inspect.

So now we're talking about clams and mussels and oysters. ~~ always an adventure!

;-)
