My Husband "Subvet" says that when our first son "Sonshine" was born the sun rose on our world, when our second son "Gator" was born the sun laughed and when our daughter "Sugars" was born all the flowers bloomed. That says it all.

EUREKA!!

Yesterday, as you're reading this I met my aunt halfway between here and Shreveport and received all that fabric....

here's the haul. These pics were taken as I walked around the pile on our covered deck. Unfortunately the garage is full so this where it will stay till I get it all sorted out. (which will be ASAP!)

Now, I need to know how many of you might be able to use some fabric!

Here's the folks already on the list for free fabric...

Stephanie D
Lori
Nancy
Jen
Jacquie

Linda, does Amanda need some fabric for those dolls??

Lisa, would you or your kids like some fabric to make clothes (or doll clothes) with??

Jungle Mom, don't you have a daughter who sews??

Not only will I be going through my Grandmother's stuff, but I need to sort out my own stash so there's gonna be plenty to give away. Y'all just let me know if you'd like some.

As I open the boxes and start sorting it all out there will be more pictures to come so stay tuned!

As lagniappe for me my aunt brought me these too!

In the back standing tall are some daylillies from Grandmother's garden and some purple iris. "Louisanna Iris"

The 2 roses in front in the black pots I bought, they are "Tyler Roses" anyone out there heard of Tyler Roses? Grown in Tyler, TX....which is only about 10 miles from where we met.

The other 4 roses are cuttings off a rose bush that has been in my family for over 100 years. The earliest known owner of this rose was my Great, great Aunt Ethel. (there might be another great in there, she lived to be 102 and I lost track of the generations) When she died my Grandmother had a cutting started, then my Aunt took Grandmother's bush after she died. My aunt has since started several cuttings off this same bush and brought these to me.

Now the BEST thing about antique roses is that they SMELL GOOD!! I'm not talking stick the flower up your nose and say...oh that's nice kind of smelling. I'm talking smell it down the street and wonder what that is that smells so good kind of smelling, and they usually only bloom one rose at a time.

I can't wait to get out here with a shovel and get these babies in the ground! Gotta go buy some poop first. (manure)

woo hoo!

Oh wow, how do you stay away from those boxes??!! And old fashioned roses that smell, I was just talking to Henrietta about those tonight. She's an expert on roses. Me, I like to HEAR and SMELL about other people growing them! Me, well, I can grow a holiday cactus and tomatoes! Oh, and an occasional hard to kill outside flower! I will be looking forward to seeing lots of pictures as you open those boxes. Oh, it's like Christmas in the summer! Better even!

Fabric? Did you say fabric? Yes, how can you stay away from those boxes? And I missed the part where she gave you all that fabric....did she close a store, or something?

Who can't use more fabric? Or yarn?

Oh, lucky you! On the fabric and the roses!

Thanks for the offer of a share in the fabric, But I also inherited tons from my Mom ~ and I don't sew very often... I don't have your talent, girl!

And, I know what you mean about the antique roses and the awesome fragance! They may not always bloom as long, but it's way worth the time they do bloom. We have a big heirloom rose bush in our backyard that we can smell all over our property (which is a lot of ground). -- Getting these which have so much meaning for you is wonderful! Pray to St. Therese over them while you plant them to give them a little extra boost. (I think doing that is the only reason the roses I recently planted survived the really bad weather and hail we've been having!)_

Mama mia, that's a lotta fabric! It looks to me like you hit the mother lode and then some!

I shall ask the snarly resident teenager if she needs fabric and see what she growls at me then let you know!

man, that is a lot of fabric. i think it's cool that it will be distributed and used. it's like spreading the wealth. almost (ALMOST!) makes me want to sew =)

and how cool to have those rose clippings. since i won't be able to smell them, i'll look forward to pictures of when they are producing flowers in all it's blooming glory.

MM,

I could use some fabric, preferably in the form and shape of a nice little comforter for later on this winter when I'm stuck in these COLD, COLD, Ohio winters.

Wow!!! What a haul!

Tyler Roses - well not to pull age on you or anything buuuuuuuut, when I lived in Houston people stood on major intersections and sold huge bunches of Tyler roses. This was about the time you were being born. (Arrrrrgh! I can't believe I can actually say that). They are very special and I've thought about adding them to the property. I made several trips to Tyler to visit the fields.

Right now I have about 50 or so huge rosa rugosa (white and pink), which smell to high heaven and bloom all summer. I started with two one gallon pots and when they threatened to swamp the back yard I pulled up starts and planted them everywhere.

I had to take them out of Mary's meditation garden because they got so dang big and started to sent up shoots everywhere. And guess what? They are still coming up even after being sprayed with RoundUp. Amazing...

...and in answer to your question go to

http://www.oakesdaylilies.com/supplier/home.php?id=s000

and browse around. There are actually about 25 thousand different daylilies. The orange ones you are referring to are what we call ditch lilies. They grow along country roads. I actually have some and people actually buy them.

I prefer pinks, wines, and any daylily with an "edge" - either ruffle or pie crust.

My hands are literally itching to dig into those boxes and see what kind of treasure you've been gifted with! I'd be thrilled to get some of your fabric, especially 100% cotton or cotton blends.

Have I mentioned, I bought a new sewing machine back in the Fall and I still haven't even threaded it to try it out? If you send me some big enough pieces of fabric I'll make me some new house dresses. I have a favorite one that I'll disassemble and use for a pattern. Or I may just lay it over the new fabric and guesstimate how to cut it out.

I want to make Emmy some dresses and outfits too, but I don't want to over estimate how committed I'll be to sewing. I have to be in the mood for it or I might as well forget it. If I'm not in the mood to sew I end up ripping out most of what I sew. ;-/

Good luck with your flares. Hope they take hold and flourish for you.

Oh, lucky you to get some startings for antique roses! I love their scents and hope to start a rose garden by next summer. One of my recent older patients said he used to stop anywhere he went and just ask the homeowner if he could have a clipping from their roses. They usually said yes, and he ended up with hundreds of rosebushes.

Thanks so much for the fabric, MM! Besides quilting, I have another project in the works that sound as if it will be just the right opportunity for your fabric.
