well, my poor overworked brain cell forgot that I'd already taken pictures for this week's S&T last Saturday. So, I have 2 S&Ts today heehee.
This is a portion of the china we recently got from my mother-in-law. There is a whole lot more of it in the garage waiting for me to unpack, wash and put up....
Subvet's late brother bought this while stationed overseas with the Marines during Vietnam. We're not sure exactly where he bought it and his Mom's memory isn't what it once was.
So, this brings up a question. See the salt and pepper shakers? One has 1 hole, the other has 5 holes. Which is which? Now according to what I think, there's salt in the pepper shaker and pepper in the salt shaker. Then I looked closely at our everyday shakers that are clear glass, and they were filled the same way as the china....so, I'm outnumbered.
I leave y'all to tell me who's right!
Now, Go on over to Kelli to see all the other Show and Tells!

Well you've got me going straight to google. There's plenty of controversy over this subject btw...

I would have said salt with more holes and pepper with less a few years ago but today I'd say pepper with more holes and salt with less.
well, now, that was decisive! Thanks ellen!
I think salt with less holes and pepper with more. Pretty china! :)
I always assumed the one with more holes was for salt and the one with less for pepper. You realize you're not getting any clear answers here! LOL That truly is beautiful china set...I enlarged the picture and love the design on it. As for the recipe above, what a great idea to puree all the veggies for the sauce!! xox
love the china!!Is it a blue or soft blue??
Oh and I love Romulus and Remus!
it's a light blue..matches my living room :-)
what's romulus and remus???
OH! duh, sorry, didn't realize it was in the pic....it's a souvenir from Subvets travels in Uncle Sam's Canoe Club.
What a pretty cabinet!
Classic answer is: salt with more holes, pepper with less. You can overdo and overwhelm the food with either, but the pepper overdone would make it inedible so much faster - hence less holes.
Blessings! Q
My mom had a similar if not the same one of the Wolf and Romulus and Remus!!! So I knew from childhood...she was a fan of mythology!
I'd say one hole, salt. 5 holes, pepper. Salt generally flows better so only needs one hole.
Personally, though, I like a lot of salt and hardly any black pepper, except on chicken and dumplin's. If you can still see 'em, there's not enough black pepper on dumplin's. ;o)
Are the holes the same size? Because the smaller hole might be for salt, since pepper flakes are a little larger.
As for me, at eateries and casual restaurants, I just take the top off the pepper. They fill them so full, none can come out, and I've never yet had too much pepper on my food, but too salty ruins it. When they come with the grinder, I usually ask if they can just leave the grinder at the table. If not, they have to stand there an AWFULLY long time.
LOVE that china!
