My Husband "Subvet" says that when our first son "Sonshine" was born the sun rose on our world, when our second son "Gator" was born the sun laughed and when our daughter "Sugars" was born all the flowers bloomed. That says it all.

yesterday was fun!

Well, last week we got invited to a birthday party for a little girl in Gator's class.

They obviously have a lot more "disposable" income than I do. Of course, that's not surprising since all of my income gets "disposed" of every time I change a diaper...or three!

Anyway, these folks had hired a petting zoo for their 2 year old's party!

Sorry I forgot to take the camera...but truthfully, I was too busy protecting the animals from my kids to be taking pictures anyway.

Gator's favorite thing to do was chase the 2 geese, Sonshine took a particular shine to the tortoise....even thought the poor guy looked hot and "helped" him into the water trough for a little swim!! (We pulled the poor guy out quickly!)

I looked him up and it says all you need to feed em is weeds...we have LOTS of those!

This little guy was incredibly friendly! He stayed out of his shell while the kids were holding him and everything.
Might make a good Birthday gift...wonder how they get along with cats??

Subvet vetoed my hermit crabs in painted shells for gifts idea.....

Yeah, I know, just what I need...one more "kid" to take care of!! heehee...but he was cute!

We were talking on the way home about how gentle Sonshine is. This kid has always had a love of animals! If he proves to be good in school we'll probably encourage him to be a vet.

Who knows what the future may hold?

Fun! Our neighbors got their girls hermit crabs for Christmas one year. Died quickly.

goldfish are easy to replace if unexplained death and cats like!

Sounds like someone had fun. By the way, tortoises do love to get into the water so long as it is not too deep. They drink, and soak, and often poop in water - hopefully in that order.

I think that one in the photo was a Sulcata Tortoise, or African Spur Thighed Tortoise. They can reach pretty large sizes and weigh up to about 225 pounds or more. You may want to reconsider this:

"Might make a good Birthday gift...wonder how they get along with cats??"

They make a good birthday present if you have a large lot on which to keep them, live in a pretty dry climate, and have indoor facilites (like a full large room)in which to care for them during the colder months, and an adult will make sure it is cared for correctly. They probably would not pay too much attention to a cat. They live a long time, and are definitely a long term commitment. Just thought I'd let you know because when you see a baby, about the size of a golf ball, you'd probably want it badly they are pretty cute. They also actually are kind of lovable and are one of the few types of reptiles (tortoises in general) that are responsive to human attention to some degree.

All the best,
Glenn B

We had church last night at a working pioneer homestead. Chickens, guineas, goats, cats, dogs, mules and I'm sure some other things I missed. I loved it! I'm just a big kid when it comes to animals of all types, both domestic and wild. I was raised in the country with most of those animals as well as cattle and hogs.

Tortoises do need more care than you might think. They're not for everyone.

Glad y'all had a good time!

Love and hugs,

Diane

yup, a petting zoo for a 2 year old....I thought it was bizarro myself...but hey? my kids loved it and we were only out $10 for a gift. heeheehee.

didn't realize the tortoises got that big. Don't have room here...maybe later in life. This guy was about 8" in diameter (shell) and he was very friendly. I was more worried about how much attention the cats would pay to him! Dead turtles are not on my list of things to do!!

oh and Glen, this water was too deep...about 18" deep...way over the poor guy's head!

I'm still in a little bit of shock that someone "hired" a petting zoo for a birthday party. We wanted our daughter to consider being a vet because every animal in the world loves her but she said there's no way she'd ever be able to put an animal to sleep....

And how does your boy have to do in school in order to become a Subvet??

A pettig zoo? They hired a petting zoo? Oh my gosh, what happened to regular old birthday parties where if you were lucky you got a little goodie bag at the end. I thought the birthday child was supposed to get the presents, not the guests???

The times they have a'changed.
