So, the purpose of My Advent Calendar is to teach my children the Christmas Story from scripture. We are now 5 days into December and I've posted 5 bible verses here and at home. But the big question is, is it working??
Are the kids learning the Christmas Story??
Here, you decide, but please remember that Sonshine just turned 5 and can not read anything other than his nickname.
Oh and check out the quality of my new camera's video feature....can I ever say enough about this camera????
The nativity scene to the left is an Advent Calendar I bought from the Caramel Nuns...inside each door is a cute little pic that has nothing to do with Christmas. So we're not opening the doors and just admiring the beautiful nativity scene on the front!
This is a pic of the Advent calendar we were given that was full of peppermints that I tossed and instead filled with scripture and pictures.
For others with or curious about teaching young, delayed, autisitic-ish kids: find the key to your kid. Every kid has one and use it extensively. My kids are typical for autism in that their keys are visual clues and music. Remember, any words set in a rhthym is a song and will stick with them. I spent a lot of time picking clipart pics to go with the different sections of scripture. This, along with the nativity scene will help to cement the parts of the story in his head. Also know that keeping the hands busy allows the brain to focus...contrary to popular belief...so give those hands something constructive to do!
So far so good, Once learned, never to be unlearned!
If you would like to follow along with the Advent Calendar or get caught up without the other posts in the middle then look under "Topics I blog" in the sidebar and click on Advent Calendar, there you will find only the scriptures from the calendar as posted each day.
In other news, I'm glad y'all are liking the music. If you have a favorite song feel free to submit it for review and if I like it I'll add it to the list. Blue Christmas, Dreaming of a White Christmas and Winter Wonderland are OUT, so pick something different please. The latest addition to our music list is one of my favorite Christmas songs and this version is new to me...it's done totally and authentically in one of my favorite styles of music. Tis a style I was raised on. Take a listen to Sleigh Ride, betcha you'll be surprised at the music of my childhood!
I didn't get a good pic of my Dad, but he and my BABY brother look a lot alike, as do he and I. Funny, he's only my half-brother...a product of my Dad and Step-mom, as is my sister. But my sister and I could pass for twins. Or at least twins 8 years apart. I'll have to find a good pic of her and me and post it.
