What will you do for good sausage?
This evening found me driving 20 min to the next town over.....through ever worsening snow (damn that global warming!) in search of decent sausage to make my New Year's Black Eyed Pea Jambalaya with.
I was dismayed to find that the little butcher in town does not carry Andouille sausage.....matter of fact the poor woman behind the counter didn't know WHAT Andouille was........when I said it was a Cajun sausage she said, "well tomorrow we'll have some Boudin."
ayup. I knew I was in the wrong place!! To quote my cousin's facebook comment "Boudin is not sausage. Boudin is in the boudin category all on its own."
So, a quick call to my step-mom for a viable NE Texas alternative to Andouille and there I was driving through snow at sunset on a sausage run.
All because I just couldn't stand the idea of making Jambalaya using Kielbasa. Just doesn't seem right somehow... But now I am the proud owner of 5lbs of decent (yet not Andouille) sausage and here in a few minutes the Jambalaya making will commence.
Gonna have to make myself a nice long shopping list before my next trip to La.....
What's your traditional New Year's meal??
In case you were wondering I have to make it tonight as I'm working the 30th, 31st, and 1st so I won't get another chance to cook before New Year's Day.

Black eyed peas but made with a large, very meaty ham bone and corn bread of course.

I pretty sure our local grocery stores carry a brand of andouille sausage. Maybe I should make Jambalaya for New Year's and start a tradition. We really don't have a New Year's food tradition...
Happy Jambalaya New Years to you and yours!!
I don't eat any meat, but I do cook meat dishes for my husband and son. I'm surprised that you can't get Andouille sausage at your local large grocery store (we have Dominick's (safeway), Jewel, and Whole Foods as our bigger stores. I've bought Andouille from them before.
Although, I do remember being in Traverse City Michigan visiting friends and there wasn't a store or deli around that sold fresh ricotta cheese. They only sold the really crappy stuff that is kind of whipped and pasty looking. So, I know what it's like to have a "recipe crisis". ;-)
We usually have live lobsters for New Year's Eve, but we make them at home. On New Year's Day we usually have chili so the guys can eat when they want...during half-time of whatever football game they're watching.
Oh how funny--we can get andoiulle here! In several stores, but the best place3 is a little homemade locker in Nicollet MN called Schmidts Meat Market. They make 13 different kinds of summer sausage, plus lots of other things. No big new year's plans here, we're going to stay in with Mason.
Traditional New Year meal? I wish I could remember. I think it used to be Chinese food.
We'll have whatever's easiest to put together--no traditions here, though I grew up with the "greens" menu for money. Maybe pizza!
We don't have a traditional New Year's Eve meal. This year, it was ham and provolone on nice, whole grain bread :) I'm glad you found a suitable andoiulle substitute :)
Happy New Year, mighty mom, subvet and little subvetettes!
Hope you're enjoying your meal and having a wonderfully relaxing day!
Wishing you health, happiness, and job security for 2010!
So good to run across your post. I just learned what andouille was from my brother-in-law and now I see the proper way to spell it. Would love to make Jambalaya soon!
that was some special sausage!
i don't have a traditional new year's meal. we've done everything from ordering pizza to going out to a nice restaurant.
this year we made tacos since we had both kids home with their boyfriend and girlfriend. we then played games until the ball dropped. fun evening.
