My Husband "Subvet" says that when our first son "Sonshine" was born the sun rose on our world, when our second son "Gator" was born the sun laughed and when our daughter "Sugars" was born all the flowers bloomed. That says it all.

a new adventure.

I've written here before that life is an adventure and I am NEVER bored!!

Well, our adventure has taken another twist these last 2 weeks.

The private school that the boys've been going to has told us they can no longer meet Sonshine's needs. We spent about a week exploring private schools that specialize in kids with autism. The running rate for these schools is $16,000.00 per kid per school year. (laugh, folks...just laugh....it's better than crying, so laugh).

Next option was finding a public school district that would take us as "out of district tuition". Meaning we pay a fee and don't have to go in the district where we live. Ah well...apparently everyone thinks they're too overcrowded to take any out of district kiddos.

The downside of living in the sticks is that there are about 3,000 kids in our entire school system and there aren't a lot of options/services for the special ed crowd. Mrs 4444, I did find out that it is no longer as bad as what I'd told you initially. As of now they have pulled out of the "Special Ed Co-op" and only contract out certain services. So I guess they have hired more special ed certified teachers.

We are hoping that Sonshine will be able to start regular Kindergarten next fall "with support" which in lay terms means that he goes to class with all the other Kindergarteners, but will have an aide to help him stay on task and may have his assignments curtailed to what is feasible for him to accomplish.

For now we are having to be good show horses and run the track and jump every hurdle in our path in order to get him signed up before the teachers/therapists flee for the summer.

"[Momma] says that beginnings are scary, endings are usually sad, but it's the middle that counts the most. Try to remember that when you find yourself at a new beginning. Just give hope a chance to float up. And it will... ."

Can anyone name that movie?

So it's Tally-Ho and onward into this new adventure! Should prove interesting.
:-)

I've heard that quote before, but it's been a long time, so I'm not sure, but is it from "Hope Floats?

Also, it's eerily close in meaning to a poem I wrote in high school eons and eons ago. I might have to dig it out and email it to you. Wasn't half bad for a 17-yr-old.

I hate that you're having to do so much running and jumping, but the hurdles will be more familiar when it comes time for the other two. Maybe y'all and Sonshine will be able to wake the school system up to their inadequacies and "spur" them on to fulfilling their responsibilities.

(Did you like that I stayed with your theme, Texas?)

Oh dear ... this does sound like a conundrum but you're right, you may as well laugh as crying will do you no good at all. Of course, you could always laugh until you cry I guess. I sure hope it works out for the best.

By the by, "I Want Love" by Elton John came up on your player while I was here. I love that song and he's right, I want love myself but alas you can't always get what you want!

I too, hope it works for you. Where I teach, here in "civilization?!" our district gets extra money for taking autistic kids. Some of the teachers and parapros in the program had to help a parent fight the district to get the services they were promised in order to bring their child to our district. The district wanted to use that extra money for other things.

"Hope Floats" I hope that's right! If not, my 2nd guess is "Forrest Gump"!!!
Bless your heart! That is stressful but you seem so strong and matter of fact about whatever God allows in your lives. I'll be praying for the best case scenario to play out for your Sonshine!

Hope Floats is my guess, too. (With Sandra Bullock and delectable Harry...) I'm so sorry you guys are having these schooling troubles. Have you tried praying to the St. Thomases? St. Thomas Aquinas, the patron of schooling, and St. Thomas More, a huge proponent of education and a most wonderful father...

Sorry, but I almost always forget movies before I even leave the theater. As for the school thing, I am really glad to hear that! It sounds like it's going to be great :)
